Turkey Trot 5K Race Recap

26

November 23, 2012 by Katie

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving yesterday, I definitely did. My day involved some hanging around with my family, a stop at my favorite coffee spot, the Roasterie, catching up with my little brother and then dinner with my cousins and aunt and uncle.

The whole day started off with a bang at the Thanksgiving Day 5K Run & Family Stroll at the Sprint campus. For those of you not from KC (aka almost everyone…) Sprint has basically it’s own zip code south of the city and they hosted this 5K around the land that they have. We did the race last year and thought it would be a great way to start the day again this year.

My dad and I were ready to go!

My Dad, two of my cousins and my uncle all participated. We were pretty excited upon arrival with a celebrity siting: KC WOLF! Haha

As you all know I’ve been dealing with an IT band injury, so I figured I’d be dropping out early. However, I think the adrenaline got to me and I managed to run the whole thing! I wanted to pace my Dad to a PR so I chugged along in front of him to keep him going, and he kicked butt! There were tons of hills and it got pretty windy, but I loved the challenging course (haha compared to the Chicago lakefront).

Our only complaints about the race was the organization at the start line. They had paces set up for people to line up by, but it seemed that most people there weren’t racers and didn’t understand. We lined up at 10 min/miles and it was not only so crowded, but there were TONS of walkers in front of us! Hopefully they’ll be more organized last year?

When I got home it was time to ice my IT band… it was not too happy with me.

But definitely worth it! I just don’t think I’ll be running for a bit. My half marathon training is going so well…

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, I’ll be back on Sunday with my Best Body Bootcamp update!

Did you do any kind of family exercise on Thanksgiving?

Where is your hometown?

    Oh that’s so fun!

Take good care of that IT band!

  2. I wish I would have done a Turkey Trot but I managed to get a run in yesterday – I travelled for the holiday so I was pumped to run in a new area! My hometown is Long Island.

  3. Happy belated Thanks Giving! That race must have been such good fun, I can imagine getting a good workout in only makes the day more enjoyable :-)

  4. Bummer that your IT band hurt afterward. But maybe it’s progress that it didn’t hurt while you were running??

I’m from Champaign, IL. There aren’t any good turkey trot races nearby there (just an untimed one mile event) and this year we were in Chicago anyway. So, no family exercise!

Oh it hurt while I was running (pretty sure I was limping the last mile) just not so had that I couldn’t keep going… So progress! Haha

  5. I wish I were in KC now!! Hopefully I’ll be there sometime during Christmas break! I did a treadmill run on Thanksgiving morning while watching the parade on TV :-)

P.S. You saw Craig’s cousin yesterday… he is the KC Wolf!

  6. Have you been foam rolling that IT band? GLad you had a fun time – come back to the CHI!

  7. How cool that you got to run with your family!!! Look like you had fun. :)

  8. Tracy says:

My hometown is KC!! Yay! My family and out of town guests all did the Sprint Run too. Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. SO fun you got to pace your dad and he pr’ed!! so awesome!! i ran a turkey trot with one of my friends yesterday! :)

I think most Thanksgiving day races attract a lot of people who don’t race all that often (or who don’t consider themselves “runners”) so they don’t know normal race etiquette. Usually in those situations, I try to line up as close to the front as I can. The super fasties dart out pretty quickly, so I usually don’t have to worry about being in their way anyway.

  11. I’m glad that you were able to run! I had to walk the Drumstick Dash because I hurt my knee. It was still fun though!

  12. Congratulations on the Turkey Trot! I have always wanted to try one. Maybe next year… :)

That’s pretty sweet! Cheers to you guys for running outside in the cold. I just have never been able to enjoy a cold weather jog/run and am always impressed with people who do! I wasn’t home for Thanksgiving, but while I’m home in Dec we have plans to do yoga together, that’s our family activity. My dad is the only runner now, my brother used to be too, but somehow, in the last year or so, they all gravitated to yoga, which makes me extremely happy for family activity time!
