HIIT Treadmill Running
44March 12, 2013 by Katie
Bonjour!
I hope you all had a good start to your week! The weather has been a bit… dreary here in Chicago recently, which Molly can attest to:
Since snow and ice have kept me away from the lakefront (a few other reasons as well), I’ve been doing almost all of my runs on the treadmill. I actually LOVE doing short runs on the treadmill because I can mess with the speed and make it more fun. Last week I put together this HIIT run for you all!
Why would you want to do an HIIT run versus a steady state run? Well, according to Shape, there are 7 main benefits to HIIT running:
1. Efficiency – You can easily shave 5 – 10 minutes off a run by adding in sprints to your regular “easy” pace, depending on the distance of the run.
2. Burn more fat – HIIT running increases your after burn, so you’re burning more fat for a longer period of time after the run…

Hindsight is 20/20–Running Injuries
41March 4, 2013 by Katie
Today’s post was inspired by an e-mail I received from a reader recently. She is training for her first marathon but dealing with some serious IT band pain and wanted my opinion on whether or not she should complete the race.
Obviously I couldn’t tell her what to do, but I could tell her my experience and give my advice. For those of you who have been reading for a while, you know that I ran the Chicago Marathon this past October. During training I had some IT band issues and took a week off during training, which helped me out and I was able to run the race without issue.
Two weeks later, however, I started feeling a sharp pain in my left knee from my IT band, which then persisted for months. My issues still aren’t gone (my right one is bothering me now), and I know they never will be. Thinking back, I had an injury before leaving college that I didn’t understand and now realize was an IT band issue. That was when I’d run max 6-9 miles a week so I know this is just something I have to deal with throughout my life….

Run Chicago & TV Online
60February 19, 2013 by Katie
First of all, I wanted to say thank you for the great response to my post yesterday! I thought that might resonate with a lot of people, and it certainly did. Just remember to believe in yourself and appreciate who you are and where you are right now, instead of holding off things because you’re afraid of failing or not being accepted.
Speaking of going after goals, does anyone know what today is?
It’s the day registration to the Chicago Marathon opens! If you’re looking for a marathon to run this fall, I HIGHLY suggest running the Chicago Marathon! It was incredibly well organized and they’ve changed the start times, so any complaints you may have heard about the “open corral” are no longer an issue.
Not only is it put on well (as is the expo!) but the course itself is great – you get to run through all the neighborhoods of Chicago, so the change of scenery keeps you entertained. Not to mention the crowds! I only remember one small bit of the course that wasn’t lined with spectators cheering you on. The energy and excitement of running such a big race really kept…

Proper Running Form
40January 28, 2013 by Katie
Happy Monday!
I hope you all had a great weekend! I definitely did, especially since I got to spend an evening hanging out with some good friends, and then spent Saturday morning cheering on several other friends at the F^3 Half Marathon. I was signed up for the race, but clearly wasn’t capable of running the half. I’m glad that rather than wallowing in my apartment, my friends inspired me to join them cheering on some of our fellow Chicago Bloggers. Plus, Molly came with us, so it was a good time for all.
After I talked about my plan for returning to running, I got a couple questions about running form. I mentioned in the post that my legs are disproportionately long compared to my torso (aka my legs take up a lot of my height).
Feel like you’re an anatomy class? I sure do.
Aaaaaanyway, my physical therapist game me some things to work on that would make running easier for body. Because my legs are so long…

Back Into Running Plan
52January 25, 2013 by Katie
For those of you who’ve been reading for a while, you watched me run my first 10 miler, my first half marathon and then spend months training for my first marathon. And then the running stopped.
My last real run was on October 23rd. 8 miles.
After that, I was out. My IT band kept me from running very far, no matter how much I wanted to push it. I saw physical therapist after physical therapist. I stretched, I foam rolled, my legs were bruised from my PT sessions. But no improvement. For the last 4 weeks I’ve run a total of 3 miles, broken up into short spurts to work on my form, as recommended by a new physical therapist.
On Saturday I’ll be cheering on friends running the F^3 Half Marathon – the half marathon I am registered for, and wish I could run. However, Saturday also marks 4 weeks from when my doctor said to take a month off, which means it’s time to start running again. I’m praying, however, that my IT band doesn’t keep flaring up, and I can …

2012 Races Recap
26December 28, 2012 by Katie
Happy Friday! I’m sure those of you who had to head back to work this week are appreciating this three day week, it’s almost the weekend! I’m a little sad because a couple of my good friends are heading home on Sunday, so it means only a little time left with them. But nevertheless, everyone loves the weekend!
With 2012 coming to a close, it’s only traditional to do a few re-caps to look back over the year, what we’ve accomplished and how we’ve changed. I saw Lindsay do this post last week and I thought it would be fun to look over all the races that I did in 2012, since it was a pretty big year for me! I actually remembered a few races while doing this that I’d completely forgotten about!
Races participated in: Eight

Riding the Mizuno Wave
61November 26, 2012 by Katie
Happy Monday! Well, I’m back in Chicago and back at it… but I keep reminding myself that in less than 2 weeks I’ll be in Charleston for a friend’s wedding, and then in 4 weeks I’ll be home again! I think I can, I think I can…
As I mentioned briefly in my post yesterday, I got a new pair of running shoes! I’ve been wearing Asics, which I bought in June, wore through marathon training in September, and then bought the updated version 4 weeks out from the marathon.

Now What?
59October 15, 2012 by Katie
Hey everyone! It’s Monday and I know many of us dislike Mondays (end of the weekend) but this week I’m taking it as a fresh start! After a rough week last week, I’m ready to get started with a new plan.
I did want to mention, several of you, as well as my training group leader, said that marathon blues are a very real thing! Good to know I’m not the only one who gets a little depressed when the big day is over.
But how do you solve a problem like this? You start a new plan!
A month or two ago I signed up for the F^3 Half Marathon here in Chicago. Honestly, I’m not sure what F^3 stands for, but…

Sunday… Smatterings?
9October 14, 2012 by Katie
Hey everyone! I hope you’re all having a good weekend. I don’t really have any kind of cohesive post for today, so it’s going to be a little more like a Thursday Thoughts post… Work for you? Okay good.
1. My brother and sister-in-law road-tripped it to Springfield this weekend, which means… THEY TOOK MOLLY. No Molly time for me = sad Katie. Molly was also a little bored in the car:

I am.
50October 12, 2012 by Katie
Meghann wrote a great post yesterday about promoting a healthy body image; about how we are all different and we should love ourselves the way we are. I really needed to hear that at the moment.
Every since the marathon ended I’ve been in a funk. Everything I was avoiding while focusing on the marathon smacked me in the face on Monday, including my weight. Am I overweight? Of course not. My clothes just don’t fit well anymore and that’s all I’ve been able to think about. Isn’t that crazy? I JUST RAN A MARATHON. I trained…
