Thursday Thoughts

1. Back to the airport tomorrow because I’m headed to BLEND!! Blend = Blogger + Friend. The Blend Retreat is just that – a retreat, for blogger friends. This year it’s in Boulder and although some of my good friends won’t be returning, I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of new and amazing women!

2. I had a late work event on Tuesday and the views from the office building where it was held were stunning – a full look over Grant Park and Lake Michigan. This photo does it ZERO justice… should have done a panoramic!

3. This past weekend I got to go HOME TO KANSAS CITY! I couldn’t mention it on the blog since my mom reads this, but my grandparents called me last Tuesday saying they’d love me to come home and surprise my Mom for Mother’s Day (and they wanted to see me too since it had been a LONG time). So I flew home Saturday morning, surprised my mom (she was SHOCKED and cried… love you Mom), and then headed back to Chicago Sunday evening. It was a quick trip but I’m so glad I had the opportunity to spend some time with my parents and my little brother.

4. My parents actually just moved (for the first time in 31 years) and while showing me the finished product (I’d been to the new house before but with zero furniture), my dad showed me how much stuff I have left stored at their house… Thanks Dad! 😉

5. While home I also went to Yogurtini with a friend. I haven’t had froyo in… months and months and months! It was SO GOOD!

6. This week I’ve been taking a bit of an exercise break. A few slow workouts here and there but really I’ve been a lazy bum and I NEEDED it! I jumped straight from 8 weeks of Insanity Max 30 into a free week of Barre Code classes and my body was DONE! Perfect timing too since I know Blend will be an active weekend and then I start a new program Monday!

7. I have been an epic failure at book reviews, I know, I know! I’ve read several books since my last review so I’ll have to get those up ASAP!

8. Have a great Thursday!

One Word… Monday?

Hey everyone! I’m back in Chicago from a quick visit home and I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to bring back One Word Wednesday! Just on a Monday… humor me.

So what is One Word Wednesday? In Lindsay’s words:

The only rule of “One Word Wednesday” is that you must label your pictures with one word. And it MUST be the first word that comes to mind (and yes, you can put two words together, hashtag-style if need be). If you can’t play by those rules, you probably should just sit this one out. Yeah. That’d probably be best.

Mizuno Wave Rider 17 & Turkey Trot

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Mizuno

I mentioned yesterday that on Thanksgiving, my dad and I did our third Turkey Trot 5K together. What I didn’t mention was the shoes I wore!

I had the opportunity to try out the new Mizuno Wave Rider 17 shoes and since I loved the Mizunos that I ran in last year I jumped at the chance.

What I loved most about the shoes was how light they were. I’m used to a heaver shoe and when I first ran in these it didn’t feel like I had heavy shoes on my feet. I must be really smart because I later found out that these are Mizuno’s lightest Wave Rider shoe that they’ve made!

Other fun facts:

– The New U4iC midsole is 30% lighter than standard foam, but for someone who wears a more supportive shoe, I found that this gives me just as much support.

– Another reason the shoe is so light is because they use blown rubber rather than carbon for the outsole. This makes the shoe only 8.8oz!

– And the colors – SO MANY COLORS! I have to say I do love the white ones that I received! I probably would have chosen them, or the bright blue!

After testing them out on the treadmill in Chicago, I laced up my Mizunos Thursday morning for the Turkey Trot!

The race is held at Sprint Center in Overland Park, KS and was much bigger this year than the previous years we’ve run. They tried to separate the start by walkers and runners, but the area they had the runners line up was much too small. We had to stand outside the barriers and slowly work our way in once the gun went off.

They changed the course from last year and I think it had more hills (my Dad disagrees). Either way, it was mountainous compared to Chicago but I pushed through and paced my dad for a PR!

We finished in 26:52 and I was so proud of him! He’s been cutting MINUTES off his 5K time every year that we run!

I also tried to teach him the importance of stretching after running, but he chose to just take pictures of me stretching…

I was so glad I had my lighter Mizunos to race in rather than my heavier long-distance shoes, it made for a fun race! The Mizuno Wave Rider 17 will be released on December 5th so they are the perfect item to add to your holiday wish list!

Have you ever done a race with a family member?

What kind of shoes do you run or workout in?

Good morning everyone! I’m in Kansas City and loving being home with my family! I had a great “girls night” with some of my and mom’s friends last night at La Bodega (a great tapas place) and I’m excited to see my little brother and an old friend today! Gotta get in as much as I can while I’m here!

For today’s What I At Wednesday, I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve been eating over the past few weeks (aka whatever I remembered to take a picture of). If you’re new to WIAW, head on over to Peas and Crayons to check it out!

Peas and Crayons

For breakfast I’ve been mixing things up with more eggs and veggies, or carbs in the form of bananas or plantains.

Bananas cooked in a skillet with sunbutter:

Baked Plantain with protein “sauce” from Purely Twins:

Eggs with sauteed spinach (and ketchup), avocado and banana slices:

And plenty of green juice!

Lunches and dinners have been a lot of whatever I manage to throw together, including snack plates, salads, mishmosh of whatever I have in my fridge (that’s a technical term), and salads from local food places.

Salad from Pret A Manger:

Spiralized zucchini with tomato sauce, spinach, fresh corn (from the farmers market!) and Trader Joe’s chicken sausage:

Eggs, chicken sausage, spinach, carrots and avocado topped with seasoning and ketchup:

TACO JOINT with Kelsey, Lindsay, Bethany and Erin!

And a LOT of “ice cream” for dessert and snacks made from my Viatmix. This one was pineapple, mango and strawberry. I make it with about 5 ice cubes, 1/2 cup almond milk, stevia, vanilla, a pinch of salt and xantam gum.

I also had a banana and almond butter sandwich, a fiji apple and some carrots both days during our lunch break of the Bar Exam:

And of course, after the exam, my drink of choice: gin and soda with lime!

Have you ever tried plantains?

What’s your go to drink when out with friends (non-alcoholic as well!)?

What’s your current favorite breakfast?

One Word Wednesday–KC Style

I think this week calls for another One Word Wednesday, don’t you? Although I had an amazing time in Kansas City (see below), it left me behind with studying and a smiiiidge tired. Already waiting for the weekend! Is it Friday yet?

So what is One Word Wednesday? In Lindsay’s words:

The only rule of “One Word Wednesday” is that you must label your pictures with one word. And it MUST be the first word that comes to mind (and yes, you can put two words together, hashtag-style if need be). If you can’t play by those rules, you probably should just sit this one out. Yeah. That’d probably be best.
